Loire, France

In 1513 the name Mellot was already associated with the vineyards of Sancerre. This period marked the beginning of a long dynasty of winemakers passionate about their terroir. In the late 17th century their renown reached the court of Versailles, when César Mellot was appointed to advise Louis XIV on his choice of wines. The family’s winemaking skills have been handed down from one generation to the next. In 1969 Joseph Mellot took over the winery from his father, Alphonse, and gave his name to the establishment. In 1984 his son, Alexandre, succeeded him and managed the estate in partnership with his wife, Catherine. Together, they acquired a number of new vineyards in the central Loire region, and optimized the viticultural and vinification methods. Since Alexandre’s untimely death in 2005, Catherine, aided by their experienced staff, is now at the helm. Attentive, demanding and passionate about her job, she is committed to upholding Joseph Mellot’s long-standing traditions of quality. A detailed presentation on Joseph Mellot Wines is available here.
