McLaren Vale

Established in 1979, Paxton is a family owned McLaren Vale wine company. Founder and owner, David Paxton is one of Australia’s most highly respected viticulturalists – a reputation built on managing and growing wine grapes of exceptional quality for over 30 years. The Paxton family have nurtured their own vineyards in McLaren Vale, South Australia, for three decades. Internationally recognised as one of Australia’s leading wine regions, McLaren Vale is renowned for the production of super premium quality wines – particularly red wines. In 2000, the family released their first wine under the PAXTON label: the 1998 Paxton Shiraz. Today, under the direction and guidance of Michael Paxton – David’s son and Paxton winemaker & viticulturalist – Paxton produces a range of estate grown wines under the family label, including Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Rose, Tempranillo, AAA (a Shiraz Grenache blend), MV Shiraz, Quandong Farm Shiraz, Jones Block Shiraz, ‘The Vale’ Cabernet, The Guesser Cabernet Shiraz and the flagship wine, the Paxton EJ Shiraz. The Paxton wine range is an approachable collection of wines that showcase McLaren Vale’s fruit quality (through Paxton’s superior vineyard sites), natural diversity and varietal expression. In the winery, minimal winemaking intervention ensures the integrity of the fruit from vineyard to bottle. Paxton vineyards are spread across a diverse number of sites and soil types, which are managed without compromise from planting to harvest. Michael Paxton continues to strive to minimise inputs and manages the Paxton vineyards biodynamically – a system of farming without the use of synthetic fertilisers and pesticides with a focus on promoting healthy, living soils through the use of natural compost preparations. px-aaaAAA Shiraz/Grenache
AAA is a vibrant blend of approximately 62% Shiraz and 38% Grenache from some special little pockets amongst our vineyards. The Shiraz was selected from the ‘Gateway' and ‘Jones Block’ vineyards, renowned for producing some of the best fruit in the region. These select parcels were blended with complimentary Grenache to create a wine that is engaging to a wide range of drinkers. Our blend is fun, appealing and, unlike some members of Paxton, not over the top.
px-mvMV Shiraz
Shiraz is the hallmark variety of McLaren Vale and Paxton. We have selected vineyard parcels that highlight the brightness of fruit & silky texture of McLaren Vale Shiraz. Full juicy fruit, flavorsome mouth feel and a lingering savory back palate.

2012 -91 points Wine Spectator.
Grenache
A perfumed nose with hints of mulberries, rose water and rhubarb. Light to medium bodied wine with a juicy mid palate and plum richness.
px-quandongQuandong Farm Shiraz
Quandong Farm Shiraz is a single vineyard wine that aims to highlight the intensity and brightness of fruit grown using biodynamic techniques. Our farming practices are designed to produce wines of intensity, but also with layers of texture, flavour and interest for the consumer. We think this wine exhibits these characteristics and provides both concentration and flavour and a certain delicacy, rather than simple raw power.
px-jonesJones Block Shiraz
This is McLaren Vale Shiraz at its finest. From the acclaimed 'Jones Block', this wine is well regarded for its generous, yet elegant style. A small parcel was selected from our century old vines for complex fruit flavors and seamless structure. Grapes are hand pruned; wine is aged in fine grained French and American oak. As always, no corners cut. A rich, savory and spicy blend, this wine has a fleshy middle palate and great length. Enjoyed with food, a glass or three of Paxton is certain to spice up the evening.

95 Points - James Halliday

Paxton's flagship wine, the EJ Shiraz is named after David Paxton's mother and family matriarch Elizabeth Jean. A limited release wine, the EJ Shiraz is sourced from 100+ year-old vines from our Thomas Block vineyard, which is renowned for producing fruit of exceptional flavour and natural balance. Our 100+ year old Shiraz vines are amongst the oldest in McLaren Vale and are carefully hand pruned and thinned to ensure the low and uniform yields required for super premium Shiraz. Although still very young, the wine shows classic McLaren Vale Shiraz characteristics, with an elegant, delicate front exploding with a concentration of savoury fruit, supported by full, silky tannins unique to old vine wine.
